Glossary Governance and evidence

Intended purpose

Describes what a system is intended for and under which conditions.

As of: September 2026 · Glossary with 46 terms

What is Intended purpose?

Intended purpose is the use specified by the provider, including context and conditions. The AI Act uses it when determining whether high-risk requirements may apply. A product name alone does not sufficiently describe the purpose.

Record the task, user groups, affected people and the effect of the output. Compare the provider’s documentation with the planned use; deviations may require a new review.
